About Club de Tango
Club de Tango collects the history of Argentine tango: its musicians, singers and lyricists, the stories behind the songs, and the words of Lunfardo, the slang of the tango lyrics.
Where the site comes from
clubdetango.com.ar has been online since 1998. The original Spanish-language website from Buenos Aires published articles and interviews, a day-by-day calendar of tango anniversaries, a series on Lunfardo words, pages on Carlos Gardel, and a catalogue of records, books and sheet music. Many of these pages are still cited today, by Wikipedia among others. In 2023 the site was relaunched in English with articles on tango musicians.
The current site is an independent project. It is not run by the original publishers and does not sell records, books or sheet music.
How we work
- Old addresses keep working. Where other sites link to a page of the original website, that address leads to the matching page.
- Core facts, not copies. We do not republish or translate the original articles. We take the facts that others cite them for, check them against further sources, and work them into a consistent structure of pages on people, songs and Lunfardo terms.
- Sources are shown. Pages that draw on an original article carry a box in Spanish that names it, summarises what it says and links to the archived copy on archive.org. Authors of those texts can contact us to be named or to have a quote removed.
- Written with care, not by machine alone. Texts are drafted with the help of AI tools and then edited and checked against the sources. Song lyrics are only quoted in full when they are in the public domain.
Lunfardo
Club de Tango explains selected Lunfardo words in depth: where they come from and how the tango lyrics use them.
