Norma Galán sang tango on Buenos Aires radio in the 1930s and left almost no trace in the history books. The old Club de Tango calendar of tango anniversaries, the Efemérides tangueras, gives her two facts: when she was born and where she started. We have not found an independent biography, a discography or a contemporary press report about her. This page therefore stays short. It sets out what the calendar records, explains the station where she began, and lists what remains unconfirmed.

What the calendar says

The March page of the calendar lists, under 13 March, the birth in Buenos Aires in 1917 of the cancionista Norma Galán. Cancionista is the word used in Buenos Aires for a female tango singer, as distinct from the male cantor. The entry adds a single fact about her career: she made her debut in 1935 on Radio Cultura.

She shares the date with two men whose careers are better documented. The same day’s entries record the birth in 1915, in the Saavedra neighbourhood, of the presenter, artists’ agent and lyricist Justo José Otero, author of Calesita de mi barrio, and in 1920 the birth of the singer Héctor Mauré, born Vicente José Falivena, who sang with Juan D’Arienzo’s orchestra from 1940 to 1944.

Radio Cultura

According to the tango historian Roberto Selles, writing on Todotango about tango on the radio, Radio Cultura was one of the early Buenos Aires broadcasters. Its microphones carried live performances by singers such as Rosita Quiroga, Luis Díaz, José Bohr and Mario Pardo, as well as instrumentalists and orchestras. Selles also recalls the 1934 film Ídolos de la radio, with Ada Falcón, and the founding of Radio El Mundo in 1935, the year of Norma Galán’s debut.

She was seventeen or eighteen at the time of that debut. Another singer from the same calendar who worked on the radio in those years is Maruja Pais, who sang on Radio Nacional and Radio El Mundo. Both are among the lesser-known tango artists whose careers lived mainly on air.

What remains unknown

The calendar does not say which orchestras accompanied her, what she sang, whether she recorded or how long she worked. Other accounts of her life circulate online. They give a more precise date for the 1935 debut, describe her retirement from singing in the 1940s to devote herself to her family, and state a date of death. The English page published at this address in 2023 also named journalists and fellow singers present at her debut. We could not confirm any of this in a source we were able to open, so none of it is repeated here. If you have a reliable published source on Norma Galán, such as a radio magazine of the 1930s, a recording or an obituary, we would be glad to add it.
